Amsterdam-headquartered Avantium is launching a strategic collaboration with Auping, Monosuisse and Antex to develop yarns based on its PEF (polyethylene furanoate) to be used in mattresses.

Monosuisse, based in Emmen, Switzerland, will create monofilament yarns for the project and Antex, headquartered in Anglès, Spain, will supply multifilaments.

Auping, a certified B Corporation headquartered in Deventer, The Netherlands, will test the design and manufacturing of mattresses utilising the resulting PEF-based fabrics.

Auping’s goal is to achieve a completely circular product range by 2030 and in a separate project it has already developed a fully circular and Cradle-to-Cradle certified process for mattress design, manufacturing and recycling.

“As part of our sustainability roadmap, Auping continuously works to reduce environmental impact,” said Auping researcher Geert Doorslag. “We are constantly looking for innovative, sustainable solutions for our sleep products and the environmental features of PEF-based fabrics are unique. We look forward to working together with Avantium, Antex and Monosuisse to further develop circular Auping mattresses made from PEF-based yarns.”

Avantium’s patented YXY technology called YXY produces PEF as a 100% biobased material which can be derived from any biomass feedstock containing carbohydrates. Using YXY as a fast and efficient chemical-catalytic technology, these carbohydrates can be converted into a wide variety of bioplastics.
